An #ISF2014 Thank You!

The Iowa 4-H Foundation would like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone involved in making the 2014 Iowa State Fair a success!

Thank you to all fair-goers who stopped by the 4-H Builidng to see this year's State Fair exhibits from all 100 4-H counties. Over 3,900 4-H projects were on display with hundreds of communication projects (working exhibits, educational presentations, ect.) were staged and judged during the 11 days of the fair. All created by the best Iowa 4-H'ers!
 

Thank you to all the passionate alumni that stopped by the Iowa 4-H Foundation booth to enter our drawing for a T.V., to take a #4Hselfie, or to talk to a member of the Iowa 4-H Foundation team!


Thank you to the supporters, donors, and sponsors of the Iowa 4-H program who helped fund this year's Iowa State Fair!


Thank you to the volunteers who judged, arranged, organized, and dedicated their time to the Iowa    4-H program for the last 11 days!


Thank you to the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H professionals! Without their expertise and love for educating Iowa's youth, the Iowa 4-H Program would not be one of the best in the nation!

Alumni Spotlight: Julie (Wolterman) Burroughs

From State Fair Queen to baby food producer, our December Alum of the Month has used the skills gained from her 4-H experience to propel herself to success. Julie (Wolterman) Burroughs was a member of the Garfield All-Stars 4-H Club for nine years in Ida County. Some of her projects included; showing cattle, quilting, knitting, woodworking, child development and much more. She also participated in Clothing Selection, Fashion Revue and 4-H Council.  Julie’s favorite 4-H memory was when she was crowned the 1993 Iowa State Fair Queen.  “The competition was such a valuable experience and my year as Queen, representing Iowa, was phenomenal,” said Burroughs. “The opportunity was such an honor and defined my 4-H experience.” Burroughs went on to coordinate the Iowa State Fair Queen Competition of 14 years. Alumni Spotlight: Ann Staudt

Floyd County 4-H alum Ann Staudt never sought to be a small business owner. Back in 2003, while pursuing her chemical engineering degree, a community education class focused on DIY herbal bath + body products caught her eye. “The art and science, the alchemy and aromatherapy … it was truly a whole new world of possibilities. Needless to say, I was hooked,” says Staudt. “While some of the early seeds were planted in my farm girl formative years (you’re looking at a 4-H Grand Champion herb gardener!), this new concept of using herbs and essential oils in handcrafted body care products filled me with such intrigue.” From there, she set up a mini lab with a hot plate in her dorm room and took over her mom’s kitchen during summer break. A Special Week - Just for Volunteers!

As the 2010 National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, comes to a close, it is nice to look back to see how counties have recognized those that put their time and effort into helping Iowa’s youth. These volunteers give to 4-H all year long, and it is great to have a week dedicated to their hard work. Here are a few counties that have made the extra effort to show their volunteer appreciation: With a “driving” theme, Muscatine County handed out cards at a recent leader’s training. “Thank you for Driving Muscatine County 4-H Youth to a Successful Future!” was written on the front, with 4-H member’s individual impact statements on the inside. The county also included a $5 gas card to fit the theme. Some quotes found in the card were: “My 4-H leader helps me to work towards my goals, learn how to write presentations/other communication, and to learn how to contribute to my community.” “Our leaders make meetings fun and educational.” “[Leaders] have shown me to grow as an individual an...
