With the opportunity to tear apart wedding dresses and design new garments, Iowa teens are ready to Stitch This! Thirteen teams have been selected to compete in the Iowa 4-H “Stitch This!” fashion design event at the Iowa State Fair.
The public can watch the action take place in the 4-H Exhibits Building from 3-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, said Shelly Greving, marketing coordinator for the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The event will culminate in a runway-style fashion show at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 on the 4-H Exhibits Building’s center stage.
“We originally planned for nine teams because we had nine wedding dresses,” Greving said. “We were overwhelmed by the interest from teens who really wanted to participate, so we put out a call for more wedding dresses. Thanks to the additional donated gowns, we were able to expand to 13 teams.”
During the two-day event, each team will be given a wedding dress. Each team must use the dress to create a new garment that will be worn and modeled by a team member during the runway show. The new garment must be noticeably different from the current design and at least 75 percent of the fabric contained in the final garment must be from the original dress. Each team will be paired with an Iowa State University student who will provide direction and overall expertise on patternmaking and construction.
It’s a high stakes competition, Greving said. The grand prize winning team will be featured on Michele Beschen’s “B. Organic” TV show. Each member of the winning team majoring in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University will receive a $500 scholarship. In addition, each team member will receive two tickets to the ISU Fashion Show, and the team’s garment will be on display at the State 4-H Office on the ISU campus.
Second place, creativity and teamwork awards also will be presented.
Event sponsors are Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development, ISU College of Human Sciences, Michele Beschen and Estilo Salon, which is providing hair and make-up stylists for all the models in the runway show.
Iowa high-school youth who completed grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 were eligible to apply. At least one youth on each team must be a 4-H member. The following teams will compete in Stitch This! at the Iowa State Fair.
