County Fair Tour

7/11/13 The Iowa 4-H Foundation Executive Director, Kris Fish Kuhlmann, stopped for a visit at the Central Iowa Fair in Marshalltown, Marshall County, this morning. Here are a few of the photos from her visit.

Where will she stop next? Stay tuned!

7/11/13 This afternoon, Kris stopped by the Cedar County Fair in Tipton. She had a great time exploring the fair and seeing the different things that they had to offer. At the Cedar County Fair, they sell breads, pastries, cookies, and pies after being judged, and its hard to not take them all home. She loved the "AWESOME silent auction packages for sale in the 4-H building!"
On to the next....

7/11/13 The next stop was the Iowa County Fair in Marango, Iowa. It was a pretty terrific fair stop for Kris, and she really enjoyed what they had to offer. She loved how they incorporated the State Conference theme in their club booths in the 4-H Exhibits Building. She also got to see "Lamb on the Loose" which is a feature of the sheep show- very neat!

Keep Calm and Clover On until the next stop.

7/12/13 The Davis County Fair was the next stop on this journey for Kris. Hats off to the Davis County Pork Producers and the super delicious Mr Rib sandwich.  She had the pleasure of sharing the meal with Davis County Fair Board member and State Fair Board President Gary McConnell and his wonderful wife Linda.  She even got to enjoy the company of Dave Davis, Davis County Sheriff.

It is the150th year for this fair. Donors have well-preserved this destination to secure a legacy for many years to come.  The midway is mini-state fair qualifying and the show barn and livestock facilities are first class.  Every person I met was hospitable and wanted to help me find my way. Very impressive fair! She's glad that she had the opportunity to stop by!

One more stop for this week.... where will it be?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7/12 Kris finished her county fair tour for this week at the Lee County Fair, Iowa's oldest fair. This visit is in a separate blog post. Taking opportunities as they are presented to us is something that keeps our job fun. Friday evening, on her way back home, Kris passed a billboard with an opportunity that she couldn't pass up. It was a billboard for the Wright County Fair that was going on that day. Although this was not a planned trip, and she was on her way to her hometown, she knew that she couldn't miss this opportunity. She decided to stop by, knowing that their was a pie somewhere to be found.
During her stop, she made a visit to the 4-H Building. The 4-H'ers that were watching over the booth at that time were from the Dayton Lake 4-H Club. They did an excellent job of explaining the ribbon system to her- even the pink and rainbow ribbons. After the 4-H building, she took some time to enjoy the live music that they had on that Friday night.
Here are a few photos from her visit. At the Iowa 4-H Foundation, we love looking for barn quilts on our journey to golf outing. Kris thought that this thank you sign at the 4-H Food Stand was just as awesome as the SEVEN kinds of homemade pie!
Alumni Spotlight: Lindsay Mickelson
When one thinks of 4-H, they might not jump to music. However, 4-H allows youth to develop skills that help in areas of creativity and performance. Lindsay Mickelson was a Dayton Tiger 4-H’er from Webster County. Involved in several project areas, she loved to show pigs at county and State Fair, cattle for a couple years, photography, baking and Share the Fun. “I have so many great memories from 4-H. From playing cards in the cattle barns with friends to earning trophies for raising a fine-looking pig,” says Mickelson. “Fair time was always my favorite time of year because it combined my two favorite things: hanging out with friends and tending to the animals. I can remember the first year when I started 4-H, we had our calves so tame we would lay on them in the barn, just because they would let us. Half the time the calves couldn’t care less, as long as they had food and water, they were happy.” Mickelson identifies 4-H as a steppingstone growing up, teaching her how t
Alumni Spotlight: Julie (Wolterman) Burroughs
From State Fair Queen to baby food producer, our December Alum of the Month has used the skills gained from her 4-H experience to propel herself to success. Julie (Wolterman) Burroughs was a member of the Garfield All-Stars 4-H Club for nine years in Ida County. Some of her projects included; showing cattle, quilting, knitting, woodworking, child development and much more. She also participated in Clothing Selection, Fashion Revue and 4-H Council.  Julie’s favorite 4-H memory was when she was crowned the 1993 Iowa State Fair Queen.  “The competition was such a valuable experience and my year as Queen, representing Iowa, was phenomenal,” said Burroughs. “The opportunity was such an honor and defined my 4-H experience.” Burroughs went on to coordinate the Iowa State Fair Queen Competition of 14 years. Another fond 4-H memory Burroughs has is showing livestock. “I loved the energy and sense of community on livestock show day. The entire Club worked together to get the cattle w
